St. Joseph's home was built in 1822, and this wing had never seen a proper refurbishment since. Previous interventions were minor and the patches were very visible. This created an sombre dark atmosphere with a substantial amount of wasted space. This pro-bono project sought to give the boys who live in this area a new home to make them feel like valid members of society encouraging them to become more independent. As the architects, we had to study the living patterns of the residents and try to meet their demands of privacy and security without compromising on their independence or the sense of homeliness. We ended up ripping the place apart, leaving only the structural walls and the roofs, in order to achieve our goal. The project was deemed a huge success, and is currently the home of 18 very happy boys.http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20120712/local/A-home-so-sweet.428199
