The AutoPark at Independence Mall is an underground parking garage on Independence Mall between 5th and 6th Streets. The 5th Street pedestrian entrance to the underground garage consists of two stairs, the North Stairs and the South Stairs both located on 5th Street. The project includes the design of new canopies on both stairs and new air intake covers. The new structural glass canopies will minimize storm-water intrusion and provide safety and comfort to the users. The new air intakes covers address energy efficiency issues. The design consists of replacing the current gratings with precast concrete covers. The air will be introduced via vertical wire mesh covered openings on the sides and sloped top of the new structure. Increasing the air intake area and reducing the air velocity will reduce the accumulation of matter on the screens. A maximum of vertical or steep openings will eliminate the effects of gravity and help keep the screens clear of debris. Designed as urban furniture, the structure will also provide seating to pedestrians in an area popular with tourists and school children.
