This house reinterprets regional architecture to create a modern house that this octogenarian
artist sought. Recalling the ‘dog-trot’, this house captures breezes by wedging porch spaces
between building components. Like a hacienda it defines a courtyard space in this otherwise
uninterrupted rural landscape. The roofs slope into the courtyard creating an impluvium that is
expressed in the small fountain at the middle from which the lap pool extends. The house’s
shed roof forms are carved out at the corners to give the house visual movement. Its blue
walls and metal roof blend in with the sky. The interior spaces open to one another, divided
only with brightly-painted boxes, each housing a different function. Windows are situated to
bring in as much light as possible and those on the outside walls are inset to protect them
from rain while creating niches for the owner’s art collection.
