The Technology Transfer building provides bespoke accommodation for ThinkSpace, the group responsible for the commercial development of the research endeavours of Imperial College London.
The building forms part of the Imperial West masterplan at Wood Lane in West London, which will deliver the college’s first new campus for over a century, and the vision to create a new vibrant urban quarter integrating an academic programme with office, residential and retail facilities.
The design met a demanding brief which called for a building to foster the exchange of ideas, adapt to changing patterns of scientific enquiry and provide cost-effective laboratory space. The design allows the boundary between research and office accommodation to be adjusted to suit market demands; bright, open and flexible spaces respond to a variety of work styles and tenants.
The design consists of two wings, one seven-storey and another twelve-storey, with large, open floor plates arranged adjacent to the Westway, a prominent arterial route leading into London. The building, with its highly visible position, provides a protective buffer to the multilevel atrium which is oriented toward a new public landscaped square at the heart of the campus.
