The architecture and interior design industry holds the power to transform spaces into immersive experiences. This potential is most evident in the realm of hospitality spaces, with thematic restaurants. With their ability to transport diners to different eras, cultures, or even fictional worlds, these unique establishments merge culinary delights with a captivating design. In this article, Ar. Abhigyan Neogi, Founder and Principal Architect at Chromed Design Studio will walk us through the explorations and the key considerations for creating stunning interiors that harmoniously blend with thematic concepts, ensuring an unforgettable dining experience for patrons.
Setting the table
The idea of a thematic restaurant germinates with a captivating theme. Whether it revolves around a specific cuisine, cultural heritage, historical era, or imaginative concept, the theme should seamlessly intertwine with the culinary offerings and engage diners on multiple sensory levels. It is only after extensive research that the design team captures the essence of the chosen theme. Diving deep into books, magazines, online platforms, and real-life examples aids in gathering inspiration to understand the juxtaposition of architectural styles, colours, textures, and cultural elements associated with the theme. This knowledge serves as the foundation for creating an immersive environment.
Elephant in the Room
A well-designed thematic restaurant boasts a striking focal point that immediately captures the attention of guests. Whether it's an awe-inspiring mural, a sculptural masterpiece, or an intricately crafted bar, the focal point sets the stage for the entire dining experience. It becomes the centrepiece around which other design elements revolve. For example in one of our recently completed projects- Amazonia, situated in Mumbai, the idea was to curate a gala within a tropical rainforest. Here, the main attraction was a column designed in the shape of a tree, adorned with lush foliage and hanging planters, accompanied by a sculpture of a giraffe. It utilised the vertical space to create an immersive ambiance reminiscent of a rainforest. By incorporating elements of biophilia into the design, the space exuded a refreshing atmosphere, accompanied by the invigorating scent of live plants, offering a holistic sensory experience.
Ways & Means
An intelligently planned layout is crucial for smooth traffic flow and optimal space utilisation. Create distinct zones for dining, bar areas, waiting sections, and any other specific requirements dictated by the theme. Thoughtful placement of furniture and design elements can enhance the functionality and ambiance of each space.
The Moodboard
The colour palette should harmonise with the chosen theme and evoke the desired ambiance. Select hues that evoke emotions and align with cultural references or historical contexts. Consider materials and finishes that embody the essence of the theme. From rustic woods and natural stones to sleek metals or avant-garde materials, the right choice will strengthen the thematic connection. One of our projects in Delhi, The Bean & Bear, is a quirky, fun yet cute European themed cafe lined with playful elements like the teddies, has interiors which are kept monochromatic with peach colour shades, tones, and hues - it's elegant, sleek, and totally captivating. The furniture fits perfectly with hints of white and brown, adding depth to the space, while the bar that is clad in terracotta brings a brighter pop in the space. The chocolate-hued flooring runs with the theme of the bakes and cakes while also adding a darker tone to the space to ground it with a subtle contrast.
Light it up!
Lighting plays a transformative role in any interior space, and thematic restaurants are no exception. Employ a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create varying levels of illumination. Experiment with fixtures that complement the theme, such as chandeliers, pendant lights, or thematic lamps. Lighting design can enhance the mood, highlight architectural features, and guide guests through their thematic journey. Set in the party capital of the country, Goa, our project TKYO features natural fibre lighting fixtures, crafted from bamboo and cane, adorning the steeply sloping roofs of a historic space renovated to display a timeless charm. A striking lighting mural, positioned beneath an Asian-style Pagoda frame, serves as the focal point above the bar. Programmed with DMX lighting, each metal element illuminates in sync with the rhythm and beats of the music, immersing the guests in the enchantment of sipping a drink under these sparkling lights, creating an irresistible nighttime experience.
Play the Lays
Select furniture that seamlessly integrates with the theme while ensuring comfort for patrons. Pay attention to upholstery, patterns, and textures that align with the overall design concept. Strategically placed artwork, props, and accessories further reinforce the thematic experience, creating an immersive environment for diners. Mayan, one of our projects set on the beachside of Anjuna, Goa has a very tribal and bohemian theme attached to it. To promote the same, the design team has played with the textures and tones of different materials such as Bamboo, Cane, Macrame, Wood and Jute; the materials that help in hitting off with a strong aesthetic and vibe. This look has then been finished cohesively with breezy white drapes and potted green plants that bring a refreshing zest to the warm tones beside the blues of the Arabian Sea.
In the realm of such thematic restaurants, architecture and interior design weave together to create a culinary journey like no other. From the moment guests step through the doors, they are transported to a world of imagination and delight. The harmonious fusion of design and cuisine creates a sensory experience that lingers long after the last bite, or even the last sip of their drink from the night. So, step into these immersive spaces, where flavours dance on the palate and surroundings enchant the soul. Indulge your senses and let thematic restaurants whisk you away to a realm where food and design coalesce into a symphony of unforgettable experiences. Bon appétit!
