The Hanley Building is a mid-century modern facility, which had unorthodox and antiquated finishes and systems, especially the perimeter heating and cooling for the first through third floors. The buildings vintage, outdated bathrooms required a complete overhaul, while the multi-level auditorium posed additional obstacles to Bailey Edward’s efforts to produce a collaborative and open multi-purpose space for the Illinois Department of Transportation.
By undertaking a thorough study of the facility’s existing conditions, assessing the client needs for both the overall project and specific endeavors, such as the auditorium, bathrooms and the perimeter heating and cooling system, Bailey Edward evaluated the needs of the building, weighing against preserving elements of the original construction. Ultimately, a seamless and accessible design developed a transition between the existing building atrium and the redeveloped conference/training center. Three design options were created for the building’s perimeter heating and cooling system, making note that the existing antiquated systems in place and custom ceilings made this project component more difficult. Every bathroom required a remodel and optimization of existing space to include a lactation area. Through these meetings, the team assembled the findings into narratives, and presented to the client a booklet with the different design options, priorities, costing and phasing recommendations.
Through Bailey Edward’s extensive studies, client meetings, and expertise, the Illinois Department of Transportation will be able to make informed decisions on phasing projects and prioritizing funds to eventually provide them with useful and impactful meeting spaces that allow for flexible and efficient collaboration among users.
