A family home on a small corner site. Compact but spacious feeling with a Japanese influenced layout including spacious rooms adaptable with use of a series of sliding doors. Due to limited site size the layout had to be very efficient eliminating any waste space. The Ground floor has no passage and circulation is instead from space to space. High ceilings, arrangement of windows, large glazed door openings; skylight and glass block walls enhance the feeling of space and treatment of light entering interior spaces. All four bedrooms have direct access to bathrooms. Positioned to the sun with access to courtyards and decks on the north west and east. Aside from good use of the sun for passive heat, it is very well insulated with double glazing, batts and slab insulations excess of normal requirements. Natural cross ventilation is achieved with the appropriate positioning of openings and a butcher fan instead of airconditioning. Large eaves provide protection from weather and over heating in summer, the upper floor cantilevers for the same purpose. ShadowClad and Hinuera Stone have been used with contemporary lines and solid forms providing a very well grounded building. Hinuera Stone wrap around corners and wing walls create a very substantial looking result using conventional construction methods. A Hinuera Stone feature wall is carried through into the interior at the entrance to complete the illusion that gives the appearance of a solid stone 400mm thick wall that is actually a double sided cavity veneer wall.
