İstanbul foundation of art
and culture (İKSV) moved last year into Deniz Palas, a 19th Century building
located in Şişhane. While renovating the Performance hall located in the
entrance floor of the building, we gave priority to clearness, purity of the
volume, non destructive identity to be appropriate to all kinds of
performances.
To accomplish the renovation of the hall in the time
left between activities of two months, without affecting the rest of the
building, we denuded the whole space to its structure and left the rest
(mechanical and electrical) intact. We left the structure composed of round
steel columns and beams, constituting the framework of the building in open.
We redefined the stairs,
the bar and the control desk in a way to compose a whole with the space. We
designed its new form in a way that it functions the best with minimum space
requirement. Thought as a small scale stand the stairs embed a storage space
underneath it, which is reached easily from the control room. There are two
bars located at the two levels that can be used at different performances but
will not be active all the time. Each of these bars is placed as far as
possible from the scene, yet they were designed accordingly to be remarkable.
Used with painted iron construction elements, these components in order to
catch a warm atmosphere and taken into consideration the acoustic properties of
the space were coated with cassette type parquet.
