Football facilities on parking house IKEA, Netherlands
The site is located at the south side of the city of Utrecht, Netherlands. It’s at a junction where the
city meets the large-scaled infrastructure of the canal ‘Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal’ and the highway
A12.
IKEA Netherlands wished for a substantial 22.000 m2 expansion for their 18.000 m2 store. The
only way to do so appeared on the north side of the existing store, on the site of the sports club
Faja Lobi KDS. Because the soccer club wanted to stay at this location, IKEA came up with the
idea to lift the fields to a height of 10 meters on the roof of a newly built three-storey car park.
Because of the limited space available, various functions such as an underground tunnel for
trolleys transport, a public road, three parking levels and the two sports fields with associated
facilities are organized as a multi-layer system. Especially, the solution for the two fields with FIFA
2 ** classification for soccer club Faja Lobi KDS on the roof of the IKEA parking house is unique.
The soccer fields have been executed with light layers for water storage instead of a traditional
heavy package between the roof deck and synthetic turf top layer.
By making a pedestrian bridge inside the building -running along the east facade on a height of five
meters above ground level, flying over a new public road - there has been created a convenient
connection between the parking house and the new entrance- and exit area of the IKEA store.
The entrance to the sports facility on the west side makes a direct connection to the new regional
recreational zone along the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, which is currently still under development.
The total project implies a complete urban integration in the area. After all, this project includes,
next to the total transformation of the IKEA store and construction of the parking house, also a new
public infrastructure and relocation of sports facilities. Because of stacking the program, the large
scale of the development and a public road running right through the building, the expansion
resulted in a complex with a very strong appealing ‘metropolitan’ character.
