The Idyllwild Performing Arts Academy is a performing arts high school directed at developing young artists into successful professionals in fields including creative writing, dance, film and video, interdisciplinary arts, music, theater and visual art. Three concepts form the underpinning of the project. The first is the field pattern of trees, both existing and proposed that form structural supports. Second is the geologic nature of the project, with the penetration of larger masses through the base to form 'peaks'. Lastly is the residual, which are sloughed-off chunks of rock that create the smaller scale programs. The program for the new Performing Arts Center consists of three major, conspicuous pieces: the concert hall, the black box, and the performing arts theater. These conceptually and physically ground the project and provide the anchors for the additional back-of-house and lobby spaces. An undulating roof plane folds around these precise volumes, forming unique spaces underneath for the gallery/lobby. It is supported by a series of scattered columns and smaller "under-progs" such as the café/bookshop and box office. Similar to the peaks of the surrounding mountains, the theaters protrude through the topography of the roof, framing the context, both near (towering pines) and far (Tahquitz peak). The project intends to create a new center for the extensive campus, providing spaces for students from all disciplines to socially comingle and academically collaborate. It also helps to re-establish a major pedestrian path that cuts through the project, engaging it into the larger campus armature.
