It was 2005 when old town of Naju city was decided to develop in a new city called Bitgaram Innocity. After two years of planning, Construction started in 2007, and the new city was formed at the end of 2014 by moving public enterprises. The most major company among moved enterprises was KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation), and lots of electric-related institutes moved to the new city. ‘iDRS’ means Integrated Demand Response Service and their duty is keeping the balance of electric usage by integrated control of electric users such as major factories. As KEPCO moved, iDRS decided to make new headquarter at Bitgaram innocity.
The 2,651m2 size site located in the southwest of the city. Rectangular shape site is rotated about 50 degrees in north-south axes. Main access to the site is on the south-west side of the site. Adjoining green buffer zone blocks the crowdedness from the commercial area behind.
While we researched work scope of iDRS, the most interesting space was the situation room, where is used in 24 hours for monitoring the usage of electricity. Real-time usage is monitored on the big screens on the wall, and before it reaches the limit, electricity usage maintains balance by reducing of the contracted factory. With the situation room, the control room, where is the place to report to the government officers, and the large conference room is the core spaces.
As a result of rearranging of space program based on function, it consists of 3 wings, the control wing, the office wing, and the manager & VIP wing. The control wing is a space for controlling, monitoring, conferencing of electric usages and the office wing is for working and resting space for staffs. The manager & VIP wing is for CEO and visiting government officers. The situation room, where should be approached from all the three wings connects These 3wings. Therefore, the overall form of the building became three masses stretch out in different directions from the origin point (the situation room).
The control wing is the most important space and locates in between 2 wings, facing the distant mountain view on the north-south axes. The office wing is the biggest space and locates in parallel with longitudinal boundary. The manager & VIP wing is the smallest space and locates in perpendicular to the office wing. The upper level of the control wing is planned to be open space under a big arched roof for multipurpose usage. Planning various resting spaces was an important goal. The main staff lounge is on the 3rd floor and adjoins the roof garden, and the fitness space is on underground level and open to sunken space in between the control wing and the office wing. There is an open resting area in piloti under the control wing.
