A bridge is a structure in order to connect two extremes, being only a passage, a transition space,
linking point A to point B in order to overcome an obstacle. Our proposal question this function of the bridges, by creating a bridge that besides having a unique transition character also create permanence and meeting spaces, giving its users the opportunity to enjoy a new perspective of Amsterdam and its relationship with the river Amstel.
STRUCTURE
The structural design of a bridge is defined by his
span. Starting with a three dimensional grid of metallic
tubes, we create small spans that can be overcome by thinner tubular
profiles. The material of the metallic tubes, would be bicycle
frames that were abandoned, so we add a historical load to
the new structure as well as take advantage of materials
that would otherwise be discarded.
The spacing of 60 cm between bars, gives to the
structure a transparency character so that the bridge at
certain times disappears.
The structure of the bridge becomes an icon, moving between structure
and sculpture, but a sculpture that can be
experienced and lived.
PATHWAYSAmsterdam has a fleet of more than 130,000 bicycles. The extensive use of bicycles in the city often requires separate spaces for pedestrians and cyclists to avoid accidents and promote convenience, so we propose a bike lane and a pedestrian path separate to organize the flows. The drawings of the paths have a design to create new views for those in transit. The tears in the
structure adds zenithal light and broaden the
perspective.
As in pointillism, in which the position of the observer defines how the work is perceived, as that space is crossed he transforms - filtering out the light in
different levels, transiting between the opaque and transparent.Between presence and absence.
PROGRAMThe cafe is located inside the bridge, at a level above the street level. Thus creating a different perspective to their users, admire the scenery of the Amstel river, a privileged view, that would not exist without the bridge.Likewise, the bicycle repair, located near the bike lane, becomes an element of attraction for the bridge, and situated on a cantilever off
the structure of the bridge, is easily recognized by those who walk by the street. In front of the
bicycle repair we propose a square in the center of the bridge,
creating a meeting place and appreciation of the landscape.
