The project is a proposed design for Iconic mosque to be built at Dubai Creek Harbor site in a competition launched by Emaar.
Religious architecture is associated with spiritual, emotional and psychological state of mind and feelings. That is why mankind has always incorporated symbolic essence in such structures. Spiritual feel has always been considered related with ‘verticality’ either they are heighted roofs of structure or placement of temples over the mountains which also evokes the feeling of awe and admiration.

Historically, verticality is found in religious architecture, for the same purposes, but over the period of time, mosque architecture has evolved into a definite kind of formula and acquired its form in horizontality. Now, there is not much experimentation or evolution in mosque’s architectural language. So, it is felt static.

Islamic teachings are very comprehensive to answer any new issues in line with the world development in economy and technology. Islam would not be contrary to any science. The verticality not only refers to symbolic spiritual experience but also addresses today’s contemporary architecture (specially in the context of Dubai), while being representative structure of religious identity.

This project is a progressive step while adhering to the traditional spiritual concepts and not replacing existing models. So, the challenge is to devise new solution and appropriate form which can satisfy the viewpoints of the believer of the 21st century at such a prestigious and modern context, while keeping it aligned with the conventional practice in Islamic architecture.

Historically, the architects or craftsmen of the Islamic world symbolized their intellect and knowledge through mathematics (the language of intellect), geometrical shapes and forms, numbers, orders and color in their art and architecture. This gave a new dimension in symbolism, which may be called as ‘Islamic Symbolism’. Symbolical forms are metaphysical reality of things and they exist whether a man is aware of them or not.
