Located on a full city block between PetcoPark
and the new Main Library site, ICON is comprised of four separate residential
buildings ranging from 5 to 24 stories utilizing a variety of forms, colors,
and details to create a vibrant urban living environment. The development has
327 residences comprised of conventional, loft, and live/work units, as well as
retail space and 400 subterranean parking spaces.
The design derives
from the historic fabric of the EastVillage, interpreted as
sophisticated contemporary downtown living. Intriguing narrow “alleyways” lead
from the street through the cluster of 4 separate buildings to a central
courtyard that acts as a communal gathering space. Rising above, and directly
across from the San Diego Padres ballpark, the high-rise tower rooftop features
the Sky-Box, a community terrace for viewing action on the field. Another key
feature is the incorporation of the historic CarnationBuilding
at the northeast corner of the site, which maintains a traditional low-rise
scale to the eastern side of the project.
