The Lofts at Gallerie occupy leftover land, formerly a gas station, adjacent to a cemetery. The surrounding
area has surface parking lots and parking garages. Still, views from this oddly shaped parcel were interesting to
the design team, both into the park-like cemetery and the nearby World War I memorial. A prime goal was to
activate the street, increase walkability and be catalytic for future development. Unit entrances are connected
to a generous sidewalk with porches. Balconies stretch beyond the building to access far away views, weaving
through the brick facade. Artwork on a prominent corner entrance integrates with the public spaces. Parking is
subgrade, with lighting bleeding through perforated brick screening for a subtle visual connection. Today, the
sidewalk is full of residents walking dogs or making their way to nearby restaurants and amenities – a complete
transformation of a once bleak and empty part of town.
