Located within South Beach, the ICON residence subverts the typical apartment typology by introducing an architecture that dematerializes in order to open up the space to both embrace and reflect the apartment's views and surroundings. The result is an intimate and symbiotic relationship between the interior space and the skyline, the Atlantic Ocean, and the string of islands that comprise Miami Beach and Biscayne Bay.
A series of sliding and pivoting grey mirrored panels forms the bulk of the apartment's architecture and permits the space to maintain a sense of openness while simultaneously making every surface reflective. It also allows the residence to be closed off in some areas to maintain privacy. The flexibility of these panels provides a fluctuating and interactive series of rooms that can be customized to respond to varying times of day and to the changing needs of the occupants. The ceiling is composed of a saw-toothed, undulating, reflective surface that, together with the mirrored panels, amplifies the outside views and constantly changes with the weather and environment. The project also utilizes materials that purposefully contrast with the glossy quality of the glass including teak as well as dark and light grey terrazzo surfaces.
The architecture is simultaneously dynamic and immaterial as the space manages to both make a powerful statement and also disappears, giving prominence to the natural surroundings.
