The topic of my diploma thesis is Ice Stadium. I chose the topic myself, motivated by love for skating and ice sports and the fact that in Bulgaria there are only two ice rinks. One of the first challenges was the choice of suitable terrain. The site plan is of an already built sports complex which consists of a functioning sports hall, football stadium and another sports hall not used according to its original purpose. The abandoned sports hall was being built in the 90s of last century, but there was change of political system which reflected in diversion of finances and it has remained unfinished. The task of my thesis is to design an ice stadium, extended to include two ice rinks - one main field with 6,000 seats for spectators, a training field and the necessary service facilities. The overall architectural concept is as follows: the dysfunctional gym available to be reconstructed and its volume to be used to accommodate the training field. The bigger newly designed hall with 6,000 seats to be located in close proximity, and the two volumes to be joint by a single storey unit performing service and communication function. My wish was to keep the connection between the park and the surrounding buildings because of that the entrance to the main hall is through two big stairs between the terrain and an open space, which is organized on the roof of the single storey volume. The architectural appearance of the complex is a result of analyzing the image of the existing building, highlighting its constructional design aesthetics and transferring this pattern over the entire composition.
