Ibis Style Bangkok Silom
A hotel building, approximately 10,000 square meters in size, on a 2,272 square meter plot of land, hidden in the heart of the prime business district. The land is located on Silom Road which is the main road in this area. But the shape of the land has only 7 meters of land adjacent to the main road, almost 50 meters deep, so it is sizable that can build a large building. Surrounded by the high-rise buildings in front and on the side (one side is a 5-story residential building, and the other side is the United building at the parking level), only the back is an open space above the community of Soi Pipat 2 with a wide view towards Sathorn Road (Diagram 1)
From the constraints of the project location, In terms of hotel design, There are both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of the project is its location in the business district and tourist attractions, which is a special characteristic of the Silom area that has both daylife and nightlife, making it a hotel that can accommodate both business trip guests. and Travel trip guests. Also, the location is not far from both the BTS and MRT, which are considered important public transportation for the city hotel. And the disadvantages that require the design to solve problems are accessing deep in the alley including difficulty to see from the main road and sidewalk in front of the project, also being an enclosed area of land.
Architectural Design Process
In laying the layout of the building, from the waste of the land, it is a road area connected to Silom Road for a distance of almost 50 meters, causing the inner space to be used as fully as possible to get the maximum building area according to the code. (from the construction area able to build a building not higher than 23 meters and the area not exceeding 10,000 square meters). The architect, therefore, chose to use a space other than the setback distance around the building to build an interior Court to promote the reception area. And open the view from the inward-facing room (Diagram 2)
Architectural design concepts are shared with Landscape & Interior Designers due to the physical constraints that design must be connected to. And tell the story in the same direction, including the layout with the court in the middle, thus overlapping the space of the architectural façade. In the realm of inseparable interior work.
Given the physical location of the oasis-like building in a business district, the architects conceptualized the hotel as a "Hidden Treasure Chest" tucked away in a concrete jungle. It presents a simple box-style architecture with surface materials that show the purity of the material (Diagram 3). To be like a box that encapsulates the fun (treasure) inside. Presented in the interior facade pixel color glass and the color of the glass block wall on the corridor of the United building side, as well as the scheme, the color of the interior in the fashion of IbisStyles, where the architects draw natural light through the skylight above the atrium to highlight the colors of the interior, creating a Eureka Space for the check-in guests (Diagram 4).
Another part of the design was a joint design between the Landscape Designer and Architect to solve the problem of the frontage entrance and the distance from the public sidewalk to the building. Beginning with the entrance arch designed by the architect from the space of the atrium, combined with the material of the building's façade (wooden look aluminum) to create the identity and perception of people who pass by the project by twisting the form of the gate to catch the eyes of people coming from the station, BTS and MRT. On the opposite wall, the landscape designer invite Tikky Wow, the artist who created the graffiti to create a work that has both the identity of Ibis Styles and creates a connection with the entrance gate to create direction and experience to the entrance of the building, which the facade lighting was designed to be like the interior light emanating from the opening of the building envelope. According to the main idea above (Diagram 5)
Space Design and Interior Decoration
"Gems" in the chest of architecture, In addition to being communicated through the materials, textures, and colors of the glass façade, decorative materials, and floating furniture of the interior design work, another thing that the design team is interested in designing is services, activities, including our guests. which is like the "Gems" of the project as well. The design team, therefore, designed the space in the atrium to connect the space between the 1st floor, the lobby and All-Day Dining sections, and the meeting room on the B floor with a large staircase that is a stepping seat. That can be used together with activities in each area and can create a vibe for others at the same time.
An elevator shaft is another architectural element, which the architect chose to use as a glass elevator to expose the movement of the guests to the main hall and create a link between the functions of each floor from the B floor to the Rooftop that is the swimming pool, fitness, and bar (Diagram 6)
Telling and Inviting
This project is another operating building that can create an atmosphere according to the concept of the design team. therefore, we would like to invite those who are interested can have a stay or taste food and drink at "Prung Rod" restaurant and "Boho Bar" to experience the design work of SPACE | STORY | STUDIO.
