TIETGEN DORMITORY

IAK- UNION OF ENGINEERS DORMITORY

61, Rådmandsgade, København N, København, Denmark

YEAR
2004
SIZE
500,000 sqft - 1,000,000 sqft
The IAK Dormitory lies in an urban transition zone, where a close city structure gives way to a more open, dispersed urban pattern. The 6 level dormitory, which houses student apartments, takes form as an linear block placed along the street, to which two tower elements are coupled in an open courtyard. On the upper floors, student apartments are oriented to the street and organized in 10 groups. A linear passage connects the apartments with the main stair and kitchens, which are located in the tower elements that project into the open courtyard. The building is intended to reflect the sponsor’s identity with a simple, modern expression using industrial materials. The façades are of galvanized expanded metal shutters, lacquered corrugated steel panels, zinc siding, and wood framed glass partitions.
