Hyve is the newest nightclub to open in the burgeoning Manila nightlife scene. To elevate themselves over the competition, the clients asked the design team to design a cutting-edge and visually dramatic clubbing experience. To solve the design challenge of shaping space and creating ambiance in a predominately dark space, we focused on the ability of light to create form, affect mood, and at the same time mimic the energy of the music and dancing partygoers. We experimented with LED and electroluminescent wire technologies on varying thicknesses and finishes of acrylic combined with programming techniques. The patterns in the ceiling and walls using acrylic and textured wall treatments were designed as stylized abstractions of beehive interiors and sound waves that were ultimately dramatic illuminated with color changing lights. The final design is a result of this in-depth material, light, and pattern research. With the confluence of the light effects on the acrylic surfaces, the stadium style seating, 3D wall effects, the tempo of the dance music, and the crowd’s energy, the design of Hyve has placed the nightclub as a premier local and global clubbing destination.
