The client, Chef Bruce LIm, is a Philippine celebrity chef. For his new restaurant venture, he wanted to showcase the flavors of his childhood home, the San Francisco Bay Area, and infuse it his own innovative slant of cooking. Chef Bruce challenged the team to design an experience that would reflect this culinary offering. Iconic symbols, landmarks, and uniquely San Francisco cultural references were used to develop the design language of the restaurant. The name Hyphy’s is derived from the Bay Area slang for “hyperactive”and used frequently in hip-hop music from the 90’s and early 2000’s. The font style of the logo and the color palette are borrowed from the San Francisco Giants. Black, white, and orange permeate the space, especially the distinctive houndstooth pattern on the floor. Victorian-inspired ceilings, doors, and moldings design are used as accents for the private rooms and bathrooms. The urban vibe of San Francisco is also represented with the use of recycled skateboards, bent-plywood furniture, and exposed concrete walls. The quintessential San Francisco symbol, the Golden Gate Bridge, also figures prominently in the design as cladding for columns and beams.
