Introduction
At the time UIA 2014 in Durban, Seoul stand competition was held, we were asked by FIKA to create Seoul stand a new icon for Seoul, as the next host city for UIA 2017.The Seoul stand has a more important role to announce abroad the status of Seoul with our traditional to modern architecture and bring international attention to the city. We replied that their overriding intention had been to create a space that would prove functionally and esthetically hospitable to a range of carefully specified uses for the promotion. In that aim we brilliantly created an inspiring exhibition which could be both a space and experience which reflects the character of the city of Seoul.
Seoul, the city of Hidden Dimension
Seoul is the dynamic city that cannot be explained in a certain place, certain time or certain event. Seoul stand contains five different city fabrics in abstract way including Old palace (Kyung-bok-goong), Old city (Chung-gae-chun), New city (Gang-nam-dae-ro), New residential development (Mock-dong) and Periphery of old city (Soong-rye-moon). The installation situates visitors in the hidden dimension of Seoul, allowing them to experience dynamic city fabric with overlaid layers of grid. In its dimension, projected images and light on grid bring the space in a constant change for more than one perspective.
6m by 6m by 3.5m of given space is confined by 6 flat surfaces covering top, bottom, front, back, left, and right. Those have protruded boxes occasionally that offer spaces for machinery to perform media art. The surfaces are constructed with thin and linear horizontal and vertical elements with notches placing 100mm distance in between. Those elements are notched together to form waffle structure that is self-standing and offers an appropriate screen for media art especially expressed with lines. The depth of the elements are slightly shallow where the notch points are and brown red color represents Seoul is painted on the other part. By doing so we offer the multi dimensional reading on a singular surface and at the same time it emphasizes the construction technique of waffle structure. The 6 maps contain different city fabrics are extracted from Seoul and formed with same grid notching system. Those are overlaid with the 6 waffle structured surfaces. When you are inside of the space, depends on the angle that you are looking at, you will read multi dimensional grid with protruded boxes, maps of city fabric, or projected images of Seoul.
