The owners of the house contacted Bakken Design Build after they had finished a full interior remodel. They wanted to harmonize the exterior of the house and the outdoor areas surrounding it. This was achieved by a series of additions and modifications to the existing house and hardscape.
The addition of a covered entryway was designed to make the front of the house more inviting while serving the practical function of keeping the entry doors protected from the weather. The structure is fabricated from steel and has walnut plywood ceiling panels. A board formed concrete wall was also added that defines the new tiled walkway leading from the front door to the new driveway.
The roof of the house is quite visible from the street. The addition of a standing seam metal roof provided a way to add simplicity and pattern. New half round gutters were installed and unsightly roof vents were relocated to areas less visible where possible.
At the backyard of the house, the clients wanted a stronger indoor/outdoor connection and the ability to comfortably eat and bbq for a majority of the year. The addition of a covered outdoor living area off the back of the house serves this purpose. Two 36’ long steel beams were used to maximize the useable outdoor space. The roof is constructed of 4x8 cedar rafters and translucent roofing panels that filter the direct sunlight and keep things dry. Low board formed concrete walls and built-in IPE benches surround the patio, fire-pit and hot tub.
