The Hume Center for Writing and Speaking is a resource for all Stanford students that wish to develop rich and varied abilities in every aspect of writing and oral communication. In free individual sessions, Hume tutors help students get started on assignments; address and overcome writer’s block or performance anxiety; learn strategies for revising, editing, and proofreading; and understand academic conventions in their fields.
CAW worked closely with the staff to create a flexible, transparent space in the Hume Center’s new location on Lasuen Mall in a historic main quad building. To enhance way-finding, we used translucent glazing at interior wall for visual connection into rooms and views to exterior windows from corridors. Digital screens added in strategic locations guide visitors through the building and draw people into the communal rooms. Materials were carefully chosen to allow writing and display throughout the building. The interior remodel brought transparency to the center’s new location that would foster the mission to become a hub of the writing and speaking culture at Stanford.
