Humanities 209-210 was a renovation and reformatting of three spaces at CUHK for the School of Journalism and Communication. The new program includes a multimedia computer lab for 48 students, a student “Mac Lounge,” a small office and a server room. Beyond generally improving the quality of the spaces by using simple materials and natural colors, the ceilings, cluttered with AV equipment, services and low hanging beams, became the focus of this quick renovation. Working with Damien Hannigan and Mui Fuk Man, the ceiling was re-imagined as floating textural field that ungulates through the space and rolls down the back wall of the multimedia lab. This simple approach unified the previously segmented space while simultaneously achieving maximum height and masking the necessary clutter above the ceiling.
