Hugg is a 100m2 shop that sells health and sheepskin products located on Lonsdale Street in Melbourne’s CBD. This project brings two disparate products together; footwear and health and beauty products, in a spatially coherent interior. The budget was set at $100K AUD and completed in 6 weeks from concept design to opening.
Assembled from readily available building materials the fit-out explores the interplay of two geometries; one regular and modular the other a series of irregular surfaces.
The design evolved during the construction project as there were open and frequent conversations between the builder and the design team. For example, the original intention was to put a coloured epoxy over the existing large format floor tiles. The floor had been used for the set-out and had builder codes and notes, paint overspray and other markings. The first coat of epoxy was clear - entombing the construction markings, we all agreed to leave the epoxy clear revealing the site markings.
A major challenge was to create a shop that reflected the vitality of the brand. The name Hugg evolved out of conversations with Andrew Ashton of Work Art Life - the idea that two seemingly incompatible elements could be brought together H(health) + UGG (ugg boots) = Hugg
"The clients were very brave. We were lucky that we were recommended by the owner of Yellow Earth, another sheepskin product fit-out that we completed at Emporium."
"There was, however, a high level of trust required to let us design a very unconventional shop interior on a tight budget and timeline. The brief was very open; the space had to accommodate a large amount of stock and perform as two shops within the one space."
