Located on Hangxing Road in Yuhang District, Hangzhou, at the periphery of the North CBD under planning, the Huahe Headquarters Building houses Huahe's daily operations, reception, and internal communication. This project has been completed for over seven years, and its excellent operational condition aligns perfectly with our original design vision.
·Adapting to the Site: Length in Exchange for Height
The project site is a non-standard trapezoid, measuring approximately 173m along its east-west axis but only 45m and 28m along its north-south sides. The narrow and elongated plot projected a limitation to the owner's initial vision of building a 100m super tall headquarters building.
On the basis of meeting regulatory requirements and fundamental spatial needs, the design embraced the shape of the plot and transformed the “100m” into the building's length for it to unfold along the river, creating an expansive horizontal gesture. The building stands out in the cityscape with its continuous, bold horizontal posture. Even first-time visitors can easily recognize the headquarters.
·Vertical Sharing: Borrowing Space from Height
As office spaces increasingly blend with daily life, creating comfortable environments that foster human interaction becomes increasingly important.
The project, centered on the concept of "sharing", aims to establish multi-tiered spaces for communication and lingering and create flexible zones tailored to diverse scenarios within a systematic spatial framework. The architecture overcomes the constraints of a narrow plot by exploring vertical spatial possibilities.
A well-considered structural design provides robust support for the spatial concept. For the 15m×115m narrow floor plan, the building adopts a “bridge” structural system: the vertical circulation cores at both ends act like “bridge piers” bearing most of the load, while the office areas extend like “bridge decks” between these piers.
This structural system minimizes beams and columns, among which the main office area requires only one set of opposing columns while the full-height space in the north side needs just one single column. This not only achieves an open and transparent interior but also provides possibilities for flexible spatial use and exploration of more spatial configurations.
The roof, with a large-span prestressed concrete beam, creates a 33.6-meter-span open shared garden, which has become the building's highest vantage point overlooking the city and marks the culmination of the public shared areas.
·Facade Exploration: Balancing Interior and Exterior, Function and Form
As the facade is the medium for the building's dialogue with the city and nature, our design not only ensures its practicality for spatial use but also emphasizes its importance as the building's visual identity.
All window openings, rotating 45° toward the south, let the soft, stable natural light in while avoiding harsh direct sunlight at the same time.
The perforated aluminum panels on the exterior facade are both ventilation openings and sunshades. Their staggered arrangement breaks the uniformity of the facade, echoing the fluidity of the river to the west.
By day, sunlight casts intricate patterns of light within; by night, the lights pass through the building and become a scenery of the city.
In selecting facade materials, we made a multidimensional balance of the texture, scale, and user experience, and the ultra-white, thickened homogeneous high transparency glass we chose extends the interior's visual reach toward the city, offering unobstructed urban vistas;
The 7mm-thick perforated aluminum panels, carved and polished with a metallic-pigmented high-gloss finish, exhibit either cool or warm reflective qualities depending on weather conditions, enabling the building to undergo subtle yet precise seasonal transformations.
The Huahe Headquarters Building provides spatial support for daily corporate activities including internal communication, collaboration, and daily life. We will continue to observe the ongoing, spontaneous use of these spaces, drawing insights for design relevant to daily life.
