Through relentless attention to detail, the design of this residence had a clear objective: to create a contemporary home using traditional materials in innovative ways that both compliment the surroundings as well as create a home unique to its environment. This project had two difficult parameters: a steep narrow site and a client's aspiration for a modern aesthetic and a required Adirondack exterior. This mountain retreat boasts views of the Highlands Ski Resort and the twin peaks of the Maroon Bells. The home chases the grade down the slope, providing walkout terraces and intimate spaces at every level. The terraces offer grand vistas of the surrounding valley. Visual connections to nature and landscape abound with see-through fireplaces and expansive windows. We contrasted quarried stone and rough-hewn cedar exteriors against clean interior lines and polished finishes that echo the home's Asian influences. A balance is achieved by the seamless juxtaposition of materials throughout the dwelling.
