The HRM Global School in Delhi uses its spatial layout and internal green spaces to positively influence its students’ learning experience. The school, located in a dense urban context, has been planned to segregate high and low-activity zones, with the academic block on one end and an extensive playfield on the other.
The layout strategically navigates spatial constraints and extensive functional requirements to incorporate green spaces into its built morphology. The double-height reception leads to the landscaped courtyard and other parts of the building, and the classroom blocks have been designed around this central green space, strengthening the inside-outside connection. It creates a comfortable and inviting environment for students, enabling a sense of openness, offsetting the lack of views to the outside while also keeping the school breezy and letting in natural light. The strategic placement of this large central green space acts as a catalyst for uninhibited interaction among students.
The classrooms focus on optimizing students’ attention span and the interiors help improve their concentration. The interior spaces have been conceptualized to respond to a child’s mannerisms and behavior in terms of anthropometry, colours and scale, while making every place in the school available for learning and explorations. In times when indoor learning and digitised modes of teaching are increasingly taking precedence, the HRM School achieves a fine balance of the indoor and outdoor exposure for students.
