This is a renovation project in a quiet residential area in Kyoto. The client requested a space where people can physically enjoy wine and music, and also wanted to use speakers that they have a strong emotional attachment to, so I decided to take those speakers as the main part of this project.
First, the space was designed to be minimalistic so that the main contents, wine and music, could be experienced through the act of tasting and serving wine, and so that the speakers and turntable would stand out as objects. The materials selected include walnut, which has a European context, and mud walls and copper, which have a Japanese context, in order to create a spatial connection between the foreign context of wine and music and the Japanese element. In addition, a large opening in the façade was created to allow visitors to fully enjoy the city of Kyoto, which is rich in seasonal changes, and to establish an interactive relationship between the interior and exterior.
The main counter, which is one of the fixtures of the restaurant, is designed to always face the clientele, so that the necessary functions are contained within the main counter without a workbench on the back wall. As for the pendant lighting, I designed it in such a way that the table-top items are illuminated beautifully without glare from the people sitting at the table.
