Houthavens is an area of Amsterdam where the wood was stored in the past, Nowadays it is supposed to be redeveloped for a new residential quarter of Amsterdam. Due to the fact that the site is located in the vicinity of the historical area of Amsterdam, so-called Spaandammerbuurt, where primarily working class used to settle, water turns into an architectural element of interaction.
How to organise comfortable environment for people in the proposed neighbourhood and interlink it with those who live in the existing district of Spaandammerbuurt? How to create the balance between the water and the city by introducing this element to the design? How can we provide a certain understanding of it in different layers of society?
This actually is a point from which the proposed masterplan concept starts. The water is embedded in the site in the form of canals thus creating a soft transition from mid-rise blocks, that repeat the historical line of Spaandammerbuurt to low-rise private houses standing away in the harbour and facing both river and skyline of the city.
The submitted masterplan proposal is an attempt to eradicate boundaries between water and green spaces and transform them into one element that intergrates housing of different typologies and densities into one ensemble. Since there is no distinction between blue and green anymore, water can play the role of the soft wall between two neighbourhoods. Thus extended mid-rise development along the existing road reveals the new facade of Spaandammerbuurt towards the river. It imitates a curtain that grants public access into the area and allows people to walk through the semi-private courtyards of the blocks, in order to discover the whole story. The better one wants to interact with water, the more varied it is organised regarding the typology of housing and its density. The concept of masterplan represents an opened mixed-use district for the community, which is based on the qualities of the site (view, connectivity and space).
