Urban development competition, first prize
Concept - The area around the Mars-La-Tour-Strasse, created in the heart of a boulevard, is slowly shattering into various large blocks (of ice). The blocks, which represent raised private living areas, move freely around the plot of land, and this drifting enables interesting spatial constellations to develop. An interplay builds up between compacted and open situations within the space, while the pathways which are formed in between wend like a river through the area, steered by banks off which the water alternately glides and crashes. The gliding banks provide places to sit, while the crashing banks form the boundary between the water and the private living blocks. The pathways open out towards courtyards and squares which serve as places for the whole neighbourhood and surrounding area (including a retirement home) to spend time. This system of pathways and squares is reinforced by uniform permeable asphalt and dotted with open, light copses. The residential blocks comprise various typologies of building which are all grouped around private external areas of greenery. As with the lay-out of the neighbourhood, the communal area is also divided up spatially into fragments, turning the plots in front of the residences into private garden areas, while the communal area is formed by this parallel image.
Access - The concept makes a clean separation between private vehicle traffic and pedestrians and cyclists. The parking spaces which are situated in the semi-basement of the living blocks are connected to the edge of the residential area (Theodor-Heuss-Platz, Zeppelinstrasse and Schackstrasse). This enables the pathways and squares which are formed between the blocks to be reserved for inhabitants of the neighbourhood and nearby area. These surfaces are only affected by motorised delivery and removal vehicles and by emergency vehicles. The buildings in the residential blocks are each linked to the public area, and each inhabitant can get to the private garden via the ground floor of the residences.
