The design of the House with Two Ridges in Konstancin near Warsaw, Poland was an interesting challenge for architects from the Z3Z Architekci studio.
The shape of the building results strictly from the conditions of the plot that awaited the architects when they were faced with the task of designing a house. Its unusual shape is the result of coordinating the requirements of the Local Development Plan with the expectations of investors. For the plot, which is approximately 19 m wide, it was necessary to use gable or multi-slope roofs with a fairly large angle of inclination. An additional difficulty was the need to use a roof with a ridge that was to be directed parallel to the road.
There was a conflict of elements that could not be combined using standard solutions. A roof with a ridge parallel to the road, i.e. a maximum length of 13 m, would not be able to cover a house with an area of over 200 m2. The problem was solved by using two ridges, i.e. two roofs parallel to the road. A provision in the Local Development Plan defined this house.
The shape of the house plan also closely follows its function. The house fills the entire width of the plot at the front and narrows further to provide access to the garage and possibility of maneuvering in front of it. The front of the house, i.e. the facade facing the street, is also the garden facade. The plot imposed a lot of specific restrictions on the architects, which ultimately allowed them to come up with unusual solutions.
An additional challenge was a small house located in the back of the plot, which, as it turned out, shared a wall with the neighbor's house. The old house with the neighbor on a sharp boundary only confirmed the architects' assumptions that utility rooms should be located in the rear part of the plot, despite its south-west orientation.
From the front of the house and the terrace there is a view of beautiful ponds and the river valley. A natural, protected landscape that will never be developed. This beautiful view is undisturbed by the road, which is quite narrow and impassable. It only provides access to several plots. A measure to give privacy to the living area exposed to the road was to raise the house and the terrace so that passers-by were lower than the living room floor. This could have been achieved only due to the formation of the terrain, which slopes towards the ponds and the road.
The facade of the house is covered with fiber-cement boards, HPL boards and silicone plaster. The interior of the house was also designed by the Z3Z Architekci studio. The investor's desire was a rather raw loft interior, but at the same time warmed by wood and brick. The concrete on the ceiling was obtained from the ceiling formwork and worked perfectly in the interior of the living area.
