Our client procured a very special site on the cliff top overlooking Bournemouth Bay with panoramic views from Old Harry Rock across to the Isle of Wight, and round to Hengistbury Head. David James Architects and Associates Ltd felt very fortunate to be asked to design a luxury family home in such an extraordinary position.
The family’s brief was to create the ultimate luxury home and they had an extensive wish list. Our challenge was to incorporate all these hopes as part of a 6-bedroom family home that needed to make the most of the spectacular position. The clients wanted the street view of the house to be subtle and to be modest within the street scene whilst providing the family with privacy from the public realm. Glossbrook Builders Ltd was chosen as the main contractor after a competitive tender process, but also with the support of the Architect.
The street view of this house has overtones of Frank Lloyd Wright, with strong lines, large overhangs and stone buttresses. Once through the double entrance doors there is a striking statement entrance hall where the interplay of architectural forms creates a dynamic light space. The entrance is on the ground floor, with a basement below and a triple height-extending overhead including a floating bridge on the first floor. To future proof the house all floors can also be accessed via a lift.
The ground floor houses the main living area, incorporating an open plan kitchen, dinning room and living area with a seamless flow from the interior to the exterior rear terrace and landscaped garden with magnificent views over the bay. The interior space is designed to ensure that the view is framed and each space is defined but also linked creating a dynamic living experience. The family loves cooking and the layout of the bespoke handmade kitchen ensures that the hob has been positioned on axis so that the view can be appreciated. Off the kitchen is a large pantry/ wet kitchen that contains additional storage and work surfaces. To the rear of the garage is a separate laundry room with an oversized airing cupboard, an area for ironing and additional hanging space for drying. A heated integral double garage with floor tiles ensuring any future classic car will be well housed. Located to the front of the house is a study, which benefits from a floor to ceiling glazed wall where natural light floods the room.
The wellness area is accessed off the main living area and has a 10m indoor swimming pool and separate sunken Jacuzzi. This area has oversized glass sliding doors to the terrace and garden facilitating a seamless flow between the interior and exterior. The glass doors run the full length of the swimming pool with an L-shaped corner window that maximises light and the view. A further vertical long slot window at the end of the swimming pool frames the view of the blueness of the sky and sea. Both the living and wellness areas have direct access to the stone terrace and beautiful sculptural landscaped garden.
The stone from the main facade was utilised in curved feature walls, the curves where designed to soften the rectilinear shape of the garden. The first is positioned to the side and frames a large terraced seating area, the second contains a built in seat positioned to look at the sea and Old Harry Rocks (a local cliff feature). For those chilly evenings the seating is focused around a fire pit. At the end of garden, near the cliff there is a further terraced seating area and a summerhouse. Looking back towards the house one is struck by the solid stone forms that are linked by the first floor terrace, which is defined by an aluminium fascia. The sheer amount of glazing is striking and the first floor glazed bedroom doors have rendered frames, which celebrate their form. The exterior of the second floor master suite is framed with an aluminium facia that echoes the first floor terrace. Inset within the roof is a hidden terrace accessed off the master suite, which is private and protected from the elements; this terrace also has an outdoor fireplace.
The house has the luxury of a fully automated control system incorporating lighting, heating, security and media. The clients travel extensively and wished to have a house that they could control and monitor anywhere in the world. The house meets the code for sustained homes with photovoltaic cells and in addition solar thermal panels, which heat the indoor swimming pool.
The central vertical spine of the house is flooded by natural light via the staircase; a triple volume glazed window spans the first and second floor. The first floor accommodates four bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms; each room has a view over the bay. Each of these bedrooms has access to a large rear terrace via sliding doors. All rooms have been detailed to the highest standard resulting in a very luxurious and opulent living experience. There is also a family media room on the first floor. The triple volume extends to the second floor to an opulent master suite; the freestanding bed takes centre stage with an on axis layout to the sea. To further enhance the experience a terrace is located on the same access further enhancing the views overlooking the bay. His and hers separate dressing rooms add to the luxurious experience. The master en-suite has a large picture window with a built in bath that takes full advantage of the outstanding views. All bedrooms are fully linked to the automated media system.
At the bottom of the staircase leading to the basement is a glazed walled wine cellar. The basement houses an extravagant games room large enough for pool table, shuffleboard and seating area with a bar. There is also a gym area separate by a glass wall. The basement also has a further guest bedroom with en-suite. A light well ensures the basement area including the games room and guest bedroom are bathed in natural light. A sauna is also found on this level. The two separate plant rooms are also located on this level.
From the conception of the project the positive relationship between the client and the architects have ensured that the family’s brief has been realised. The project has been realised with an excellent working relationship with the main contractors, Glossbrook who helped ensure that the project was built to the highest level of quality. Glossbrook strove to construct the house to the highest standard with an on site manager throughout the project focussing on every design detail, and the client’s wishes.
The family have expressed their absolute pleasure in the lived experience achieved within this home. They feel that it is truly their ultimate luxury family home.
