This project consists of a house for a single family in the central area of Tokyo.
The site area is very limited and the building height was also restricted by the law. Therefore it was our largest concern to gain the maximum floor area on this plot. Three full floors with about 323 square feet and a loft floor and a basement were possible in this building. However, the ceiling height of each floor had to be very low. It barely cleared the 7 feet of the legal minimum ceiling height. Therefore the very small structural beams, such as 125 mm by 125 mm steel beams, were chosen to gain maximum ceiling height under this severe condition and the pillar sizes followed them.
The basement is a living room with a large screen and a projector. The ground floor is the garage of the Porsche and a kitchen with a dining counter. The second floor consists of a bathroom, a bedroom, and a library. The third floor has two bedrooms and one of them is used as a home office. And from the loft floor the Tokyo Tower is beautifully viewed. Each floor has its own activity and pleasure.
Since the plot is surrounded by five other buildings, it was not very easy to gain natural light inside. Therefore, the area towards the staircase, which located in the center of the plan each room, has window like openings. The openings can bring light through rooms to the staircase. The garage and the interior openings together draw the exterior atmosphere imperceptibly into inside space. This effect gives the overall open atmosphere to this house.
