The present project involves the renovation of a building from 1975. The existing structure was characterized by a multitude of functionally and spatially challenging situations. Access was into a dark and low room; the internal vertical circulation was located in a stairwell at the edge; inside, there were many small uncomfortable rooms; the connection to the garden was not ideal; and the spatial situation on the upper floor was also unsatisfactory.
The house was completely reorganized. This was mainly achieved through the new positioning of the staircase and the division into two non-overlapping stair runs. As a result, one now enters the house through a two-story bright entrance. From there, the first staircase leads to the central living space, which has a connection to the large living kitchen. Both rooms are connected to the terrace and garden by large window doors.
The staircase leading to the upper floor, which connects to the bedrooms, is located between two wall sections, thereby creating a separation between the living area and the more private upper floor. Two bedrooms are oriented with French windows towards the garden, which is away from the street; the large master bedroom has a terrace facing east. The renovation maintains the dimensions of the existing layout. However, in the upper floor, the roof structure was raised and newly constructed. The area of the master bedroom was newly built as a set-back wooden structure instead of a very low roof area.
The existing structure, built in solid construction, was insulated with a thermal insulation façade. Heating is provided by an air heat pump and underfloor heating.
