Located in the first row of constructions on the seafront of the city of Lagoa, in São Miguel, the presented dwelling was a challenge and an exercise of integration, physical protection of the façade and simultaneous openness to the sea.
Given the degraded condition it found itself in, and the existence of progressed construction pathologies in its original structure, the architectural intervention went through its demolition and the reconstruction of a new 1-bedroom house.
The programme is developed into two floors and, even though it is small, the relationship between the floors and the articulation of the spaces make this house seem wider and provides a simpler and more functional experience.
On the main side of the house one can highlight a completely enclosed ground floor in opposition to a vast open plan upper floor.
The ground floor consists of an entrance hall open to the vertical circulation and a study. It also contains a bathroom and a bedroom with direct access to a North-facing patio. On the first floor, there is a social area consisting of an East-facing kitchen, with views to mountains and the ocean, a supporting bathroom and a South-facing sitting room, with a privileged view to the sea.
Although there seems to be an apparent lack of natural light on the ground floor, and an excess of natural light on the first floor, this was created by opening strategic gaps punctuating the spaces of luminosity and views.
