ROOM TO VIEW
The secret to working with
small-footage plans is the
use of sight lines to open up
spaces that could otherwise
feel crowded or tight. That
was the principal utilized
here- seen here with the
2nd floor balcony
overlooking the living room
and out the clerestory
windows. In this case
turnabout is fairplay, the
living area can also take
advantage of the high
ceiling and windows to
amplify its space. This is
another important element
for keeping the plan
liveable- a variety of room
sizes and ceiling heights.
The owners set the goal to
be as environmentally
friendly as possible, and so
in additon to keeping the
house small, we
incorporated a highly
insulated envelope- well
sealed-, highly efficient
windows, openings
primarily oriented to the
south with shading
elements, geothermal
heating (pond sourced) tied
to radient floor heating. The
walls are locally produced
recycleable logs, low voc
finishes throughout. The
roof is comprised of 10”
thick S.I.P. panels with
integrated rafters, and will
be covered with recycled
rubber slate, with a 10k
solar panel array
