The site is one of five plots developed into residential areas 40 to 50 years ago along designated roads, and is surrounded on all sides by neighboring land, known as a flagpole lot. Inspired by the phrase "a truly luxurious space is one where openness and privacy coexist," the theme was how to create a bright, open, yet securely protected, comfortable space.
The client family's request was for a home that embodied the best aspects of Japanese housing, allowing for a truly Japanese lifestyle. Therefore, the first floor is designed to be the center of the home, with a dining area for the family to gather and eat. Surrounding this dining area are the kitchen, Japanese-style room, living room, veranda, entrance hall, staircase, bathroom, and pantry. The dining room and living room feature features such as the veranda, shoji screens, and Japanese-style room that allow for adjustment of the distance from the outside. An open atrium above the dining room allows light to enter from the second floor, creating a bright and open space even when closed.
It's common in Japanese homes for residents to adjust the openness and privacy to their preferences. It's hoped that these daily adjustments will bring about small changes within the home, enriching everyday life.
