Budapest-based Studio Arkitekter designed a nearly 200-square-meter family home which living space blends seamlessly with the garden.
The House of Sunlight – that's how we could describe this family home with nearly 200 m² of living space and two identical 50 m² terraces on the upper floor, designed by Studio Arkitekter in Budapest. The building also includes a covered summer kitchen–living room and a covered carport, both measuring 60 square meters.
Mediterranean influence and AI
Given the neighborhood’s strong Mediterranean influence, the style was the client’s request in the case of this house as well, but in a much cleaner, more modern form. Solutions tailored to the location contributed to the unique result, such as wooden cladding on the facade, walkable glass skylights, and parquet flooring mixed with marble and copper.
After modeling, Studio Arkitekter also experimented with the latest technologies: they created aquarell images as renderings using artificial intelligence. This kind of technological openness is part of the studio's philosophy.
Special needs, special solutions
The primary requirement of the clients was to turn the living room, garden, and terrace into a single living space. This goal was achieved with two huge glass surfaces (one 13-meter-long and the other 6-meter-long), which transformed the garden into an extension of the living room. Another important consideration was the size and usability of the entrance hall and kitchen, as well as the central role of the latter. As a unique comfort requirement, the client requested that the summer kitchen has its own outdoor toilet.
Covering the ground floor terraces was also a priority: in order to let in natural light and make the terraces usable in all weather conditions, circular, four-centimeter-thick, walkable glass surfaces were installed.
The stairs were covered with special upholstery, which not only makes walking barefoot more comfortable, but also completely silent.
The house of sunlight
Special attention was paid to the orientation of the building, resulting in a terrace facing the sunset on the southwest side and a terrace facing the sunrise on the northeast side. "The orientation of the pool was also determined by the sun's path," noted Viktor Csap, founder and director of Studio Arkitekter. "We placed the pool where it would get the most sun."
The biggest challenge during construction was the technical development and correct manufacturing of the unique solutions so that the aesthetics and technical implementation would ultimately point in the same direction. In addition, the aesthetic placement of the side-by-side refrigerator also had to be resolved.
"This project is an important milestone in the life of the studio, as, in addition to architectural design, the entire general construction and interior design was also managed by the team," explained Viktor Csap. "The use of materials and style both illustrate the diversity of Studio Arkitekter well."
