A screen is one of the earliest furniture in East Asian countries, and its initial function of blocking wind and providing shelter has evolved into a modern embodiment that carries both material and spiritual beauty.
Located in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, a city abundant in sunlight, stands a new standalone four-story residence. The client's desire is for each family member to have their private space, while the communal areas are envisioned to foster interacting with each other. Besides enjoying the sunlight, they wish to extend the garden's greenery into indoor space. Due to Feng Shui considerations in this spacious residence, a screen needs to be incorporated into the spatial design. Employing the technique of poured concrete, studio APL has crafted a stone screen. In addition to creating a foyer to separate the entrance from the living room, this stone screen extends the horizontal dimension of both indoor and outdoor spaces. A penetrating wooden bookshelf delineates the living room and dining area, softening the boundaries of service spaces like the kitchen and corridors.
The rooms on each floor are connected through intermediate spaces that seamlessly merge bedrooms with private bathrooms. The master bedroom features a semi-open dressing area, creating a U-shaped passage where sunlight from the balcony pours into the interior. The sister, a graphic designer, enjoys reading and drawing, her room design incorporates a floating solid wood desk facing the mountain-view, while the shower area by the window is accentuated with stacked glass bricks, attempting to bring natural light into the reading space. The younger brother, a sports enthusiast, his room integrating cantilevered structures in furniture like the sink and desk, expressing a balance of strength within the space, and blurring the lines between gaming and reading areas. The youngest sister resides on the top floor, favoring the comfort of lounging in the couch area by the window and relishing the solitude.
Life in this house is designed to evoke a sense of safety and warmth, starting from the moment one steps through the door.
