Our proposal shows particular attention to the context in which the new project fits. In particular, we want to highlight the architectural character of the place, its history and its materials, with the aim of establishing a close relationship between “old and new, between container and content, between meaning and signifier.
Specifically, the apartment in question is located in the southeast of Rome, inside a building dating back to the 1960s and 1970s.
Our goal is therefore linked to a reconsideration of the design associated with the period, through the use of simple and essential furnishings, characterized mainly by black iron elements such as bookcases and the glass door that separates the living area from the sleeping area, and the warm-colored wooden material reminiscent of mahogany, also typical of the period.
The open kitchen has an element of separation from the rest of the living room. It is a wooden structure characterized by a folded surface that at the same time becomes a table, wall and ceiling, characterized by strips, which houses a series of lamps.
The table can be removed from the unit to be arranged differently as needed and then repositioned in the initial configuration. A long distribution corridor between bedroom and bathroom contains a series of built-in wardrobes, a laundry room and a convenient storage room.
Previously, the house had a single bathroom, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room. By structuring the spaces, it was possible to recover a series of functions that allow for more adequate living comfort. The bathrooms, which have been converted into a second project, are made of veined white marble and feature a series of colored walls with sinks the same color as the walls they are located in, with the aim of ensuring continuity of the space.
The shower pillars, faucets and bathroom accessories are black to take some of the furnishings from the rest of the house.
The bookcases, as well as the kitchen, were specifically custom-designed. In particular, the bookcases have easels on which glass shelves have been inserted, while the kitchen, black in colour, as mentioned in, is separated from the living room by the warm-coloured wooden element designed in all its details
Among the brightly colored paintings that alternate with the black of the furnishing elements, an olive tree stands out, recalling the owner's homeland: Puglia. It represents a true "guardian of time", with very ancient roots that strongly characterizes the identity of this extraordinary region.
