The project was an
alteration and addition to an existing semi-detached residence. The works
consisted of taking the original envelope and stripping everything out of the
inside leaving only the existing party wall and front/street façade. The house
was then rebuilt inside this envelope with an extension to the back of the
house and that is connected to a plunge pool and landscaped garden. The challenges of
this project were to work inside the existing front façade and side walls of
this semi-detached dwelling on a very narrow site and transform a number of
dark small rooms into a house that is full of light and consists of connected
spaces that form a beautiful functional home.
The task of
maximizing space is crucial in such a tiny site, this is achieved by reducing
circulation space and using all other space to serve a purpose, ie the
mezzanines built into the kids bedrooms using what would have been vacant roof
space.
