Karkiainen House has been designed for a young four-person family in Saunalahti, Espoo. This particular area of low-rise housing has been densely planned. The plots are on a rocky hill along a horseshoe-shaped road. From the upper floors of the houses ¬there is a view all the way to the sea, unless an adjacent building happens to block it. The closeness of the neighbouring houses was the key factor in the design solution. The idea was to open up the house inwards, towards a triangular-shaped patio and further towards a larger park area so that the views from the living spaces could be made private and peaceful.
The residents wished for a simple and stylish home. White-rendered concrete block walls demarcate the living room, kitchen and dining space within the main section and the sauna department in the smaller annexe. Entry into the house is given a feeling of openness by the transparency leading from the entrance hall to the terrace and upstairs. The floor surfaces downstairs are polished concrete and upstairs wide wooden floor planks. The stairs are lit by a skylight and the wooden steps are hung with steel rods from the ceiling construction. The top-lit bathroom turns a shower into a meditative experience. A wooden bridge links together the wings of the building. The bay window in the bedroom offers a place of reflection overlooking a forested landscape.
