A typical two-storey London terraced house has been completely reworked to create a minimalist modern interior, tailored to the client’s needs. Excavating a new basement, adding a small extension at the rear and removing the original ceilings and structure at roof level have increased the volume within the original building envelope. Accommodation comprises a private work area and wine cellar in the basement, bedrooms and bathrooms at ground level, opening onto the small patio garden, and a spectacular open plan living space on the top floor.
Extensive structural work was needed to underpin the new basement and to restructure the roof, which now incorporates large glazed openings at the rear. A new steel, timber and glass stair has been inserted at the centre of the house, to allow maximum penetration of daylight to the lower floors. Externally little has changed and the original features have been carefully restored but inside there is a completely unexpected modern world.
