This project entails the renovation of a rural house located in Viseu, Portugal.
The object of this project was to optimize the space of this small, familiar house to better answer to the new program: a holiday house.
The existing rural house was distributed into two parts, the first floor which kept animals, and the main floor.
The intervention successfully recognized the character and the physical qualities of the existing volume. This way, the traditional character of the first floor survives and there is a contemporary volume superimposed where the main compartments of the house will be.
The optimization of the first part of the 3,725 square feet was obtained through putting the closets of four compartments (entry, kitchen, lounge, and quarter) in the wall of the principal front. A mediator was also placed as acoustic and thermal protection of the spaces.
On the first floor, the low height and all the interior walls were eliminated.
Traditional materials were used, including granite, wood, and iron as well as wooden shutters that provide solar protection.
