Located near his wife’s family home, this two-generation house was built to accommodate both the client’s family and his parents on a corner plot of a summer home resort overlooking Lake Biwa to the east. Requirements included ensuring an unobstructed view of the lake, ample consideration of the wind that blows down from the mountains, and maintaining an appropriate distance between the living quarters for the two generations, given that the bathroom, toilet and living room in this so-called “two-generation” home are still commonly shared between them.
The unusual gate-shaped form was turned into a large frame, while the layout proper was composed of lines, planes, and cubes. This approach allowed us to create a sense of continuity between the interior and exterior of the home, connecting the living space with the majestic landscape of Lake Biwa. Liberal use of wood-based materials both inside and outside the house created an affinity with the surrounding landscape and its holiday homes. In order to avoid clogged gutters due to falling leaves from the many trees surrounding the house, the roof and outer walls were seamlessly connected to each other. Large windows looking towards the lake were installed, giving inhabitants a splendid view from both the first and second floors. The two living rooms that connect to each other through the stairwell on the first and second floors, along with this landscape, serve to link the two families.
The south-facing, two-inch sloping roof, designed for efficient solar power generation and considerations of standard roof pitch, facilitates easy snow removal while also allowing for efficient collection of up to one ton of water in the rainwater tank. The 3.6kW solar power generator was arranged through a contract between our firm and a distributor, and installed at low cost by the client. In order to save on running costs for heating this home, we installed an underground thermal storage floor heating system that allows the residents to enjoy a discount when the heater runs for five hours or longer.
