This project had as main objective to make the most of a courtyard at the back a house
situated in Lisbon in order to bring light to the interior spaces.
The creation of an intermediate space between the exterior and interior of the house
was crucial as a global strategy to joint movement inside the house and to create a
direct relationship between the interior and exterior.
The house’s backyard which connects the living room and kitchen creates a small
heaven of tranquility in the chaotic city where it belongs.
The respect for the old building of the house was essential to not lose the charisma of
an existing house with about 100 years. The refurbishment of the baseboards,
moldings and ceilings was executed in detail in addition to the colors of the walls
which were chosen in order to give more prominence to the woodcraft details and
highlight the generous interior heights already present in the original building.
The harmony between the existing building and the new elements is developed
accurately as the house reported a very advanced state of degradation and required
new coatings in terms of floors, bathrooms and kitchen. The choice of the materials
was made to enforce the relationship between the new design and ancient solutions
so they did not conflict. At the same time there was an adaptation to the needs of
contemporary life and a relationship with new trends in architecture.
This project was done through the "Atelier do Imóvel" that promotes and invests in the
homes refurbishment in the Lisbon and Oeiras area in Portugal.
