This house has the appearance of a simple box-like factory, with square holes of varying sizes in a visual rhythm. The site is located in a corner lot where the two roads of a quiet residential area of the Chiba Prefecture suburbs cross. The owner requested a bright and large living space, a balcony with privacy, and a simple, factory-like aesthetic.
In order to secure privacy while taking in light from the road side with no obstacles, the shape was planned so as to surround the entire site. Since the design is a simple box shape, exposing its parts —such as the bolts and rail in the garage gate — prevents it from looking too minimal. Moreover, the random arrangement of square holes in various sizes creates a visual rhythm.
Inside, the bedroom and bathroom were placed on the first floor, to allow for the mostly-used dining and living areas to go on the second floor, the sunniest part of the house. Much of the light in the living room comes from a large opening that leads out to the balcony.
There is also a sliding door with storage space to the rear of the kitchen, where a refrigerator, washing machine, and household goods are kept. The atrium area provides a loft that can be accessed by a ladder, and can be used for additional storage.
