The project is designed for a young family with creative taste in visual culture; a toy collector and avid traveler who loves the outdoor. They have asked to design a house with lots of open space, plenty of fresh air and playfulness.
The site is located in center of Jakarta with a unique dimension of 7.5 meters narrow street-front and 30 meters length. These challenging conditions and clients' request act as a starting point for the design approach by dividing the site into two buildings (front and rear) with gardens in between. This strategy allows the architecture to maximize cross-ventilations, natural lights and views to the middle courtyard. The front building has three floors with the garage on the ground level, living and dining on the second level, study and guest room on the top level. The rear building has two floors with kitchen and service quarter on the ground level, master bedroom on the second level and a rooftop garden.
These two massing are positioned as split-level connected by a semi-outdoor stairs for dynamic circulation while travelling through the courtyard. Each room is designed for specific functions with ample amount of fenestration for maximum daylights and visual connections between the rooms. The house has a very distinct, subtle and graphic-form embedded within the courtyard as a sanctuary from the busy city life.
